The October 2026 Venus Retrograde
I want to start with the way Venus retrograde is often talked about in popular astrology, because I think much of the anxiety surrounding these periods comes from how they are presented. The internet isn't particularly good at complexity or nuance, and retrogrades tend to get reduced to a list of warnings: don't do this, avoid that, cancel the dinner reservation, don't sign anything important and, whatever you do, don't text your ex. Venus retrograde gets especially dramatic treatment because it touches the parts of life that many of us already feel uncertain about: love, money, beauty, attraction, and whether we are genuinely valued by other people. Anxiety also happens to perform extremely well online. What gets overlooked is the word doing most of the astrological work: retrograde. It comes from the Latin "retrogradus", which means moving backward, or stepping back. Not collapsing. Not failing. Stepping back. Reviewing. Returning to something because perhaps it deserves another look.
The October 2026 Venus retrograde is, astrologically speaking, one of the more interesting retrograde periods of the decade. Venus stations retrograde during the first week of October at around twenty-four to twenty-six degrees of Scorpio, the sign associated with depth, transformation, secrecy, and bringing hidden things into the light. It then travels backward through Scorpio before returning to Libra later in October, eventually stationing direct in mid-November at around ten to twelve degrees of Libra. What makes this particularly interesting isn't simply the mechanical fact that Venus appears to be moving backward. It is the territory through which Venus is traveling, because Scorpio and Libra ask very different questions about love, relationships, beauty, and what we value. That deserves a closer look.
Libra & Venus During The Retrograde
Libra is Venus's own sign, or its domicile in the traditional language of astrology. When a planet occupies its own sign, astrologers generally understand it as being able to express its qualities more naturally. Venus in Libra is the planet of love, beauty, attraction, and harmony moving through a sign concerned with balance, fairness, aesthetic grace, and relationships. Importantly, Libra isn't simply about keeping everybody happy. At its best, it is concerned with genuine relational fairness: weighing different needs and finding a balance that doesn't require one person to continually surrender something to another. When Venus retrogrades back into Libra and eventually stations direct there, we're not simply reviewing relationships in some vague sense. We are returning to first principles. What does love actually require? What does fairness look like inside a relationship? What do we genuinely find beautiful once fashion, expectation, and other people's opinions are removed? In that sense, Venus returning to Libra feels rather like coming home and discovering that home itself needs to be reconsidered.
The Scorpio Phase of the Retrograde
The retrograde begins in Scorpio, however, and Scorpio isn't nearly as comfortable. Scorpio has little interest in pretending that everything is fine simply because everyone is behaving politely. It wants to know what is happening underneath. Libra's desire to maintain harmony can sometimes result in difficult subjects being left untouched, and I say that with genuine affection for Libra because maintaining harmony is difficult and necessary work. Scorpio simply approaches the problem differently. During the first two or three weeks of this retrograde, as Venus moves backward through Scorpio, things that have been sitting beneath the surface of relationships may become harder to ignore. Old patterns involving how we give and receive affection, what we tolerate, what we secretly resent, or where we have accepted comfortable arrangements instead of genuine intimacy may start becoming more obvious. That can be uncomfortable. But discomfort doesn't mean that something has gone wrong. In this case, it may mean that the retrograde is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.
The timing is also interesting. Venus is retrograde in Scorpio as we move toward Halloween and Samhain, a period traditionally associated with the idea of the veil between worlds becoming thinner. Late October has long been treated by different traditions as a time when hidden things become more visible and when attention turns toward death, memory, ancestors, and whatever normally exists beyond everyday perception. I find the overlap fascinating, even when approaching it from a scholarly rather than strictly literal perspective. In 2026, the season culturally associated with uncovering what is hidden coincides with Venus moving backward through a sign that asks us to uncover what is hidden in our relationships and emotional lives. The astrological and seasonal symbolism are telling remarkably similar stories. At the very least, I think the correspondence is worth noticing.
Venus isn't only concerned with romantic love. It also speaks to material values, possessions, money, taste, pleasure, and the question of what we believe is worth having. In a broader sense, Venus describes what we are willing to invest in — financially, emotionally, and personally. Its retrograde through Scorpio and Libra provides an opportunity to take an honest look at those values. Scorpio in particular doesn't want a superficial answer. This isn't about drawing up a list of everything you've supposedly been doing wrong. It is more like taking stock and asking whether the things you currently value are things you genuinely care about, or simply things you've become accustomed to caring about. Habit and value can look remarkably similar from the outside. A Venus retrograde can help us recognize the difference.
Saturn & Pluto During The Retrograde
Saturn is also retrograde in Aries during this period, adding another layer to the process. As Venus moves back into Libra, the Aries-Libra axis brings questions of self and relationship into sharper focus. Saturn tends to demand accountability, structure, boundaries, and an acceptance of genuine limits. Venus would generally prefer harmony, connection, and ease. Put the two together and some uncomfortable questions can emerge. Are the relationships in our lives actually sustainable, or do they work only because someone continually makes compromises? Are our values supported by the way we actually live? Relationships and commitments that stand up to this kind of scrutiny may emerge stronger because we understand what they're built upon. Those that don't may reveal weaknesses that were already there. Discovering that can hurt, but knowing what something really is has its own value.
Pluto, moving through Aquarius, also stations direct around this broader period, adding a collective dimension to what might otherwise seem like a very personal Venus retrograde. Pluto's slow movement through Aquarius concerns much larger questions about community, power, technology, social structures, and how individuals relate to the collective. That means some of the questions Venus asks on an individual level have echoes on a larger scale. What do we value in other people? What kinds of relationships and communities are worth preserving? What does genuine human connection look like in a culture increasingly mediated through technology? Our personal answers to questions about love, beauty, fairness, and belonging don't exist entirely separately from the culture around us. In 2026, those personal and collective questions seem unusually intertwined.
What I would suggest as practical guidance (and I'm aware that academic caution and practical advice don't always sit comfortably together ) is not to treat the October 2026 Venus retrograde as something that needs to be survived or avoided. Think of it instead as an invitation to look again. Most of us spend our lives moving forward because ordinary life demands it. We make decisions, form relationships, develop habits, buy things, pursue goals, and rarely stop long enough to ask why these particular things became important to us in the first place. Venus retrograde gives us permission to do that. Scorpio asks us to look beneath the surface of our closest relationships and be honest about what we find there. Libra then asks us what genuine balance, fairness, love, and beauty might look like in light of that knowledge. Popular astrology often presents retrogrades as warning signs. I think that's too simple. Step back. Look carefully. The retrograde isn't necessarily warning you away from something. It may simply be handing you a lantern.
