The Age of Aquarius
If you’ve spent anytime delving into astrology, spirituality, or even just casually researching New Age beliefs, you’ve likely heard references to the Age of Aquarius. It’s a trendy phrase thrown around in pop culture and shows up everywhere from songs and movies to books and discussions about humanity’s future. However you encounter it, there’s a good chance you know the phrase, but may not be entirely sure what it means. Is it astrology related? Spiritual? A prediction of the future? The answer is sort of “yes” to all of the above. What I love about the idea of the Age of Aquarius is that whether you subscribe to it as literal astrology or not, as powerful symbolism or simply a lovely philosophy to live by, it paints a hopeful picture of humanity on Earth i.e., the belief that we are living in a time where humans will become more compassionate, more connected, and more aware of our place in the universe. But what does that mean, exactly?
In astrology, there are 12 astrological ages, each one lasting around 2,100 to 2,200 years. The ages are based on the concept of precession, which is basically the Earth’s gradually changing rotational axis. Over a period of about 26,000 years, the position of the Sun at the spring equinox moves backward through each of the signs until it completes a whole cycle and starts over again. The reason many people debate about when the Age of Aquarius begins is that the astrological ages are not set in stone. Since the constellations don’t have official edges, astrologers can’t agree on the exact time that the position of the sun shifts from one astrological sign to the next. So, while some argue we’ve already entered the Age of Aquarius, others say it’s still centuries away.
The Age of Pisces
Before we jump into what the Age of Aquarius has to offer, let’s take a look at the last Astrological age. Currently most agree we are in the Age of Pisces, which ended when the position of the sun during the spring equinox moved from Pisces to Aquarius. (Keep in mind that this is a simplified explanation and there is some debate about the official transition date. ) Pisces is a water sign traditionally connected to faith, sacrifice, devotion, compassion, spirituality, and unconditional love. For this reason, some astrologers have historically connected themes of Pisces to the spiritual foundation and expansion of religions all over the world for the last two thousand years. As you can see with these two brief examples, each astrological age is interpreted based on what the particular sign represents.
Aquarius is an air sign ruled by Uranus. It’s associated with humanitarianism, fresh ideas, intellectual curiosity, rebellion, individuality, progress, equality, and technology. In astrology, Aquarius is symbolized by the water bearer i.e., a figure bringing knowledge to others. Sounds hopeful, right? New Age spirituality builds upon these traditional meanings to envision what the world might look like if we took these traits to heart. A popular belief about the Age of Aquarius is that it won’t happen overnight. Many New Age teachers describe this time as a process of waking up, much like shifting from sleep to consciousness. Slowly, we will find ourselves more aware, more open minded, and more informed about what we can do to improve the lives of everyone on the planet.
Technology & The Age of Aquarius
This brings us to one of the most interesting characteristics of the Age of Aquarius, and that is technology. It’s hard to deny the incredible scientific advances of the last hundred years. Everything from the internet to space exploration has rapidly changed our world in ways that were previously unimaginable. Instant communication, AI, and evolving technology all fall under Aquarius’ natural themes of mental exploration, science, and deep human connection. That being said, many New Age perspectives about the age of Aquarius focus less on technology itself and more about how we can use it to serve humanity. While we will likely continue to make incredible breakthroughs in technology and Artificial Intelligence, the wisdom of Aquarius reminds us to ground our scientific advances with compassion, emotional intelligence, and an awareness of how humanity can benefit.
Finally, Aquarius emphasizes community. Instead of celebrating individual achievement, the sign encourages collective growth. We will begin to see humanity take down systems that promote hierarchy and competition and replace them with a more united way of thinking. Cooperation and community outreach will become necessary parts of solving the world’s biggest problems. We can already see examples of this spirit throughout global volunteer programs, worldwide climate action, renewable energy, open-source technology, and collaborative scientific research.
The Age of Aquarius & Expanded Consciousness
Many believe that another significant theme of the Age of Aquarius is a shift in consciousness. “Expanded consciousness” doesn’t mean we will all suddenly become psychic. Instead, it suggests we will learn to see how interconnected we really are. This includes everything from environmentalism and social justice movements to mental health awareness and compassion for other cultures. You may have also noticed that while Aquarius stresses unity, it doesn’t demand uniformity. Authentic self-expression and individuality are just as important as empathy and kindness. Aquarius encourages us to learn from one another and explore our own personal paths.
This shift in consciousness may also play a role in why so many people are turning to spiritual practices like meditation, yoga, astrology, dreamwork, energy healing, and so many other complementary practices. Whether you draw inspiration from multiple traditions or find guidance in only one, many paths are available to us. Spiritual diversity is something many people celebrate in the name of expanding our collective consciousness.
You may have also noticed that I mentioned several spiritual practices. Environmentalism and nature is another huge theme of the Age of Aquarius. Why? Because as we evolve to higher states of consciousness, we’re beginning to remember how everything on Earth is connected. Caring for our planet becomes more than just a responsibility. It becomes a spiritual obligation.
Like everything else, the Age of Aquarius has its shadows. Just as we may become so caught up in our heads that we forget our hearts, humanity can become foolish with power. Knowledge without wisdom, innovation without empathy, and freedom without responsibility are just a few examples of how Aquarius can get stuck in its own ideals. That’s why balance is just as important now as it’s ever been. I should also note that while astrologers can debate the technical start of the Age of Aquarius, I personally love what that ambiguity teaches us. If we take spiritual concepts like the age of Aquarius purely as inspirational guides, we can apply their wisdom to the world today. Each of us has the power to create a more compassionate, more aware, more innovative future by embodying these values in our everyday life. Meditation, mindfulness, learning, creativity, volunteerism, acts of kindness, community gardening etc. are just a few ways we can bring the spirit of Aquarius into the present moment. Even small choices can create a ripple effect of positivity and spiritual growth when we hold space for others to do the same.
